Ciaráns interest in invertebrates began in the 1980's when he began to record the butterflies & moths in his locality in Cobh, Co. Cork. He has since developed this interest, and is proficient in the identification of the regular species of Lepidoptera.
He has also expanded this interest to include other insects such as dragonflies, damselflies, grasshoppers and crickets, and is familiar with identification of all the regular, and many of the scarcer Irish species.
Ciarán has basic familiarity with both terrestrial and aquatic invertebrate sampling techniques such as direct searching, beating, light trapping, pootering, pitfall traps, suction sampling, sweep netting, stone scrubbing, and river sampling methods.
He is familiar with the use of keys to identify invertebrates.
